It is not a talent or an identity, but rather a method of learning and comprehending. I studied both physics and literature because I am interested in both. What I’d like to discuss is some good text that I’ve studied, how it shaped my understanding, and why the distinction between good and bad text is so important.
To begin with, I do not consider literature to be merely an expression of emotions. Rather, I read well-written material, regardless of subject matter; it could be a poem or a law book. I spent a lot of time studying old Turkish literature, which is aristocratic but nearly perfect. While I was dealing with good text, whether it was news or a silly tweet, and deliberately avoiding bad text, I found that good text enhanced my understanding in ways that were otherwise impossible. I began to improve my communication skills, using words more precisely and accurately, which I believe Turkish bureaucracy lacks.
I spent a lot of time researching old Turkish literature, which is sophisticated, unpopular, and even unknown to many Turks. I discovered texts that was so qualified and well written that it significantly improved my language skills. It was such obscure literature, but in the end, because I could deal with it, I was able to express myself much more clearly. It helped me better understand syntax, word usage, and language in general. It even aided me in my current study of English literature. I didn’t watch videos or listen to music at the time to focus more on that.
In terms of English literature, I’ve studied George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm, reading them multiple times with elaborate word analyses, and it’s paid off; each time I read, I learned something new about the language and the world. Because I was familiar with some old Turkish literature and was used to dealing with complex texts, learning English was not difficult for me. I hope to improve my English by studying Shakespeare and other classics; I am aware that my current English is inadequate.
I want to devote my entire life to one or both of physics and linguistics. I believe that with love and enthusiasm, I can add to the existing knowledge in these areas. The negative experiences I had following the 2016 coup attempt, as well as the low level of technical schools in Turkey (physics in particular is regarded as worthless by many), convinced me to try to study in the United States.
