Even for a brief moment, postpone the end of the world (my dream)
I’ve read and reread many of George Orwell’s books. I believe that one day the scenario depicted in the novel 1984 will come true, rendering the world uninhabitable. Because of digital media, social platforms, and a variety of other tools, there is already a trend toward the scenario in this novel today. Many dictatorship-ruled countries already have this situation. Regrettably, I see my own country, Turkey, rapidly moving in this direction. Over the last six years, I have personally witnessed the collapse of human rights, freedom of expression, press freedom, and the rule of law in my country.
Just as communism, which spread rapidly around the world fifty years ago, threatened the free world’s values and itself, autocratization and dictatorship, which have a nationalist background, are spreading rapidly around the world today, threatening the free world and all its values. It is obvious that serious efforts should be made to protect the beautiful values of the free world.
In autocratic and dictatorial countries, I believe the current equivalent of the expression “liberty enlightening the world” expressed by the Statue of Liberty, one of the most important symbols of the United States, is “freedom through education and individual enlightenment.” I am confident that by receiving the best possible physics and linguistic education in the near future, I will contribute to social enlightenment, particularly in Turkey, and will be able to postpone, if only temporarily, Orwell’s scenario.
